Podcast on Databases

I created a podcast about current databases available to my teachers which can be accessed through either my Destiny Media Center homepage or District sites.The podcast was designed to give teachers basis information about these database so that they can quickly determine if the site is applicable to their particular teaching needs and strategies. I could not share usernames and passwords as that is protected information. Instead I shared usernames and passwords by distributing a hard copy to the teachers at the school. It is my hope that this podcast will create greater interest and use of these databases. To access this podcast click here.

Library Web 2.0 tool blog

I chose the Blog at the San Diego Public Library mostly because Blogging is what I am the most familiar with at this point in my social networking skills. I like the information sharing about the library, and that there are photos and links embedded within the post. I did not like that the last time they created a post was on June 13, 2011. I think if you are going to create a Blog, you should be aware of the time consumption of maintaining one. In order to get patrons to interact more often, perhaps the director needs to create posts more frequently.
I truly understand how difficult this can be as I look forward to adding a new recipe post to my site soon.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0

    Libraries are increasing their usage of social software. After all human beings are social by nature. As technology advances and the information highways grow by leaps and bounds, libraries feel the pressure to keep up with these societal demands. Whether public or institutional, libraries have the added pressure to prove that they are still a viable source of information discovery and retrieval.

    In order to meet these demands, libraries have become increasingly reliant upon Web 2.0 resources. The implications vary depending upon the source. For example, RSS is best used to keep patrons abreast of library news and developments such as schedules, new acquisitions, and exhibits to name a few. IM is basically best used for reference services. However, most users are already in the library where a face-to-face meeting is more advantageous. Face-to- face meetings alleviate the time consuming job of typing. Other formats of Web 2.0 have their unique advantages and disadvantages for the library setting and should be considered on an individual basis.

    A major disadvantage to consider is the use of Web 2.0 in a school library setting with students. ITs must set up a protected network and limit access to sites w/limited commercial advertisements. But, on the flip side, teachers can interact in Professional Learning Communities, allowing fewer time consuming “in person” meetings. This in turn would give them more time to perform daily teaching duties. I myself look forward to learning more so that I may communicate with my faculty in a more efficient manner.

    Our challenge to keep up with technology is ongoing and fast paced. So, put on your running shoes.
