Web 2.0
Libraries are
increasing their usage of social software. After all human beings are social by
nature. As technology advances and the information highways grow by leaps and
bounds, libraries feel the pressure to keep up with these societal demands.
Whether public or institutional, libraries have the added pressure to prove
that they are still a viable source of information discovery and retrieval.
In order to meet
these demands, libraries have become increasingly reliant upon Web 2.0
resources. The implications vary depending upon the source. For example, RSS is
best used to keep patrons abreast of library news and developments such as
schedules, new acquisitions, and exhibits to name a few. IM is basically best
used for reference services. However, most users are already in the library
where a face-to-face meeting is more advantageous. Face-to- face meetings
alleviate the time consuming job of typing. Other formats of Web 2.0 have their
unique advantages and disadvantages for the library setting and should be
considered on an individual basis.
A major
disadvantage to consider is the use of Web 2.0 in a school library setting with
students. ITs must set up a protected network and limit access to sites
w/limited commercial advertisements. But, on the flip side, teachers can
interact in Professional Learning Communities, allowing fewer time consuming “in
person” meetings. This in turn would give them more time to perform daily
teaching duties. I myself look forward to learning more so that I may
communicate with my faculty in a more efficient manner.
Our challenge to
keep up with technology is ongoing and fast paced. So, put on your running
shoes.
